Even the fish Irwin catches have issues

Capt. Dave Catches a FISH

Our early arrival to the lake afforded us a unique opportunity to present our baits during feeding time.

This advantage became readily apparent as no sooner did we arrive at the first fishing grounds, did Capt. Dave catch a fish. Moments later did he hook another, but it shook off the lure during the retrieve.

This advantage was not lost on Mr. Irwin who said "Maybe we should get here at this time more often!"

Who am I, can you tell me?
A few minutes later, Mr. Irwin catches a fish suffering from an identity crisis. We both look at the catch with confusion and bewilderment as a cat fish is caught on a lure designed to attract bass. At first I though he had foul hooked the confused creature by snagging it while dragging the lure on the bottom, instead a legal catch was confirmed when I removed the treble hook from its mouth. Much to the surprise of Mr. Irwin, the fish was very polite and said “thank you for moving the hook”, in only the way a cat fish can. Mr. Irwin noted it probably would have spoke sooner, but it had its mouth full. After our brief exchange we returned the forlorn creature to the wild.

The one that got away
The boiling water sounded as if one of Neptune’s body guards was coming to the surface. My expectation as I spun around was to find Irwin flailing in water for his life. Instead I see Mr. Irwin frantically cranking his reel in the hopes of retrieving this monster. Unfortunately, all that returns is a loose line void of the lure which attracted the monsters attention. Leaving Mr. Irwin to exclaim “Did you see that? Did you see the size of that fish? (his arms extended wide) It had to be "T H I S B I G”. Sensing the beginnings of a fish story, I returned a look of great skepticism. Throughout the remainder of the day, Mr. Irwin mentally relives this event hoping upon hope for a different outcome. Instead, this becomes the first entry in his book of fish tales. "This is the stuff of legend" he exclaimed.

Later Capt. Dave lands another bass, with much less fanfare than the “one that got away”.

Finally, we travelled into uncharted waters, east past the Portland Mills landing up the Big Raccoon Creek. This unplanned excursion consumed almost 2 hours as nearly the entire distance is no wake. Perhaps future excursions we'll put in there and explore what seemed to be a good fishing area.

All the elements combined into a very memorable day on the lake, little vehicle traffic on the way there, few boats on the water in the early am, and perfect weather throughout. Not to mention a number of fish were caught and released. This outing sets the standard by which future excursions will be judged.
